While the meaning of Confirmation has not always been clear over the centuries, the Church understands this sacrament to be a confirmation of a person’s baptismal promises and commitment to live out the faith in their daily lives. At Baptism we are born into the Body of Christ, at Confirmation our membership is confirmed, and the Eucharist completes our initiation in the Catholic faith community by nourishing our relationship with God and the Church. The central mark of Confirmation is the reception of the Gifts of the Spirit, enabling the person of faith to live more fully the life of the Church and to witness to the love of God to others.

Recognizing the significance and importance of Confirmation, the community of The Basilica of Saint Mary takes serious the preparation for this sacrament. While high school youth and adults are welcome to participate in the program, all are encouraged to spend time discerning and reflecting their personal faith life to ensure that one is ready to receive the sacrament.

There are different programs to prepare those interested in Confirmation, depending on the experience of the candidate. Learning department staff are happy to talk with you and help you determine what is best for you.

Some Feedback

What some candidates had to say about the process.

  • I loved getting to know everyone in such a different and deeper way. It was so rewarding to be able to share my faith with such cool and inspiring people. I had a great time.
  • I learned about my faith and beliefs and the beliefs of others, and will walk out of here a changed person.
  • I learned that by questioning faith, one ends up with a deeper, more powerful faith.
  • I learned that I think I truly have found out who the real me is and that I can be confident in being that person.
  • I just want to say it was great and I had much more fun than I thought I would have, and we really connected and learned a lot about our faith.
  • I have been a part of retreats with school and church before, but this one was so rewarding.
  • I loved learning how to pray the rosary-it was so powerful!
